Foundations

Foundations is built on years of Toneworks experience serving people with complex and co-occurring needs, and on everything we’ve learned running our Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC). It serves adults whose regulation, sensory, and support needs mean a busy group setting isn’t the right fit yet. In a small, sensory-friendly space, participants build the foundation everything else rests on: feeling safe, staying regulated, trusting the people around them, and gaining real-life skills.

Every participant works toward individualized independent living skills goals through hands-on, everyday experiences. For some, Foundations becomes a bridge into TLC and wider community life. For others, it is the right place to grow on their own timeline.

What is it?

Foundations is a highly individualized, therapeutic program designed for adults whose unique needs and goals cannot be adequately met in the large group setting at our TLC program.

The program focuses on building foundational skills such as emotional regulation, feeling safe, developing trusting relationships, communication, and practical life skills. Each individual’s pathway looks different. For some, Foundations may be a stepping stone toward employment or participation in TLC’s larger group programming. For others, it may provide ongoing therapeutic support to strengthen independence, regulation, and everyday functioning at home, in residential settings, and throughout their community.

Why we do it?

While TLC was created to fill a significant gap in services for adults with disabilities, we recognized that even within our individualized programming, there were still people whose needs required a different approach. Foundations was developed to bridge that gap by offering an even more personalized level of support in a smaller setting.

Who is it for?

Some individuals may demonstrate strong independence in areas such as personal care and daily routines while experiencing significant challenges with emotional regulation, executive functioning, communication, or navigating relationships and community environments.

Foundations recognizes that support needs are not always immediately visible and that independence looks different for everyone. Through individualized programming and collaboration with families, group homes, and other service providers, we work to create a coordinated, wraparound approach that promotes a sense of safety, belonging, community, and meaningful participation in everyday life.
