Joey Augustin

What is your background?

I graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2023 with a Special Education Licensure degree. Before working at TLC, I spent a year working two jobs: 1) As a Para, then as a Student Teacher, in a Setting Ill classroom in an elementary school in Oakdale, MN, and 2) As the Kids Ministry Lead for my home church in NE Minneapolis. I now have been at TLC working as a PSA for a year and a half.

What is your role at TLC?

I am a program support assistant (PSA) here for our therapeutic learning center. That means I get to do a lot around here at TLC. As the name implies, basically anything to help assist and support the programming we run here. I’m helping strategize individualized plans for our clients in group therapy sessions, I’m preparing our space for each day for the programming that will take place. And most importantly, I’m providing personal hands-on support for the clients throughout the day’s program.

Why do you love working at TLC?

Having been here for a while, I’ve loved seeing TLC grow and establish into a more and more supportive space for our clients. I’ve watched TLC move out of a 2nd floor office space, double in staff, and implement new therapeutic practices. And I have personally gotten to grow strong relationships with the clients here throughout that time as well.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Outside of Toneworks, I love spending time with my family: my wife, Kaylie, and my baby daughter, Norah. I’m a member at my church, Redemption Church, and I volunteer with the kids ministry as well as play piano for worship. I also love being in the outdoors, running, reading, going to new coffee shops, and keeping up with my MN sports teams!

What is a fun fact about you?

A fun fact about me is that I love playing music (even though I’m not a music therapist). I grew up playing piano and drums, and taught myself guitar as my COVID project!
